Job Description – Bean Team Member

Bean Gaming is a family run independent board game café, where our main focus is building communities through great customer service and consistent positive experiences, while ditching the screens people can’t seem to do without.

We’re looking for a number of staff members to join us in our city centre board game café.

This role is a hybrid role where team members would get a mixture of front of house shifts working the bar and table areas and kitchen shifts where food preparation and cooking would take place.

The front of house side primarily involves making sure every customer who comes through the door leaves happy and wants to come back. The role involves frequent interaction with customers who have a range of gaming experience, from experts who are self-sufficient, to new gamers who are looking for recommendations and teaching them how to play.

The kitchen side is to prepare, cook and present food quickly and efficiently, as well as follow basic food safety processes such as cleaning, record keeping and stock control.

The ideal candidates will be passionate about tabletop gaming and customer service with a desire to work in either/both hospitality environment or a food preparation environment advantageous.

Responsibilities include:

  • Welcoming guests and providing basic information about the café and products

  • Teaching games, running demonstrations, and answering questions about games

  • Learning games currently in our game library and keeping up to date on upcoming releases and trends in tabletop gaming

  • Taking food and drink orders, including barista-style hot drinks and alcoholic drinks.

  • Handling cash and debit card transactions

  • General cleaning and re-stocking refrigerators, shelves, and displays

  • Taking table bookings and updating the events diary

  • Selling games from our retail section

  • Opening or closing the business with the Shift Manager, when working the first or last shifts of the day

  • To prepare, cook and present food quickly and efficiently, meeting our standards

  • Assist in keeping the kitchen clean, hygienic and tidy, at all times

  • Opening or closing the kitchen when working the first or last shifts of the day

  • Adhering to all Bean/Food Safety policies and procedures

  • Having a thorough understanding of the allergen and dietary requirements for all menu items and be able to discuss those with customers if required

The successful applicant would ideally have the following experience and attributes, but training will be provided to carry out the role.

  • Experience of working in a gaming/hospitality/coffee shop environment

  • Experience of working in a kitchen environment

  • A passion for great customer service, helping people and teaching

  • An enjoyment of board games, card games and/or tabletop role playing games

  • Good communication skills

  • A passion for food preparation and presentation

  • Well-presented, friendly, polite and dependable

Please note that the cafe is open from 5pm to 10pm Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 10pm on Saturday, 11am to 8pm on Sundays and you would be expected to work flexible shifts between these hours.

Team members would initially be scheduled to work 12-18 hours (2-3 shifts) per week, with the opportunity to work extra hours to cover staff absence and additional hours during school holidays.

This role will report to the Shift Managers within the boardgame café.

This role is an hourly paid role at £9.00 per hour
