Job Description – Bean Shift Manager

Bean Gaming is a family run independent board game café, where our main focus is building communities through great customer service and consistent positive experiences, while ditching the screens people can’t seem to do without.

We’re looking for shift managers to join us in our city centre board game café as we reopen post lockdown.

This role involves managing the smooth running of shifts and making sure every customer who comes through the door has a positive experience. The role involves lots of interaction with customers, managing staff in their duties, online order processing, some admin and helping develop best practice within the shop.

The ideal candidates will be passionate about tabletop gaming, customer service and retail in a hospitality environment with some professional experience in the relevant environments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delegating responsibilities to staff members and ensuring they complete them efficiently and accurately

  • Ordering supplies as necessary and coordinating product deliveries with suppliers

  • Covering the responsibilities of staff members who are unable to work their shift

  • Addressing customer complaints and satisfying their needs in a professional manner

  • Maintaining a safe and respectful work environment for all staff

  • Cashing up at the end of a shift and recording sales numbers

  • Opening or closing the business when working the first or last shifts of the day

  • Communicating ongoing tasks or issues to the following shift manager and/or owner

  • Assist with training new team members

  • Communicating with staff regarding new store procedures, sales incentives and product information

  • Monitoring compliance with safety standards and store guidelines

  • Welcoming guests and providing basic information about the cafe and products

  • Teaching games, running demonstrations, and fielding questions regarding games

  • Learning games currently in our game library and keeping up to date on upcoming releases and trends in tabletop gaming

  • Taking food and drink orders, including barista-style hot drinks and alcoholic drinks.

  • Handling cash and debit card transactions

  • General cleaning, facilities checking and re-stocking

  • Taking table bookings and updating the events diary

  • Contributing to social media channels

  • Assisting with online sales and packaging up games for courier collection


The successful applicant would ideally have the following experience and attributes, but training will be provided to carry out the role.

  • Experience of managing in a gaming/hospitality environment

  • A passion for great customer service, helping people & teaching

  • Ability to work on own initiative to resolve issues as they arise

  • An enjoyment of board games, card games and/or tabletop role playing games

  • Good organisational and communication skills

  • Well-presented, polite and friendly


Please note that the cafe is open from 4pm to 10pm Tuesday to Friday and 11am to 10pm on Weekends, and you would be expected to work flexible shifts between these hours.

Shift Managers would initially be scheduled to work 27 hours per week, with the opportunity to work extra hours to cover staff absence and additional hours during school holidays.

This role will report to the Owner/Manager

This role is an hourly paid role at £11.72 per hour
